We were very lucky in the developer building our villa wanted us to have exactly what we wanted. And so started a journey to a great pool we all love.
That journey was a lot of fun as we created the plan for our dream pool and outdoor living space. It took us through where to put it in the garden? How big to make it? What shape to make it? Where does all the stuff go that makes it work? What is that stuff anyway? Did we want any fancy features?
We were coming from knowing nothing – we couldn’t even tell you the difference between a filter and a skimmer. We spent hours and hours researching the web to find the answers. Sure it was fun – but it was also frustrating trying to work out what were facts and what was sales hype.
As time passed more and more choices came up. We agonised over the pool surround – crazy paving or stamped concrete? We agonised over steps – and decided on Roman steps. And all the time we looked for something we could trust to give us unbiased advice on the right choices for us.

Eventually the great day came. A huge water tanker reversed up to our finished pool. Two big pipes were unrolled and water started gushing into our pool for the first time. We couldn’t wait to get in and swim!
That started the next chapter in the life of our pool. The cost of having somebody maintain it for us would be prohibitive. And they’d be round at least twice a week in the summer to tend it.
We decided to learn to maintain and care for the pool ourselves. Initially it was daunting. So many different opinions. So much conflicting advice.
Eventually we learned how to do it in just a couple of hours a week. And discovered not only was maintaining the pool ourselves saving us a fortune, it was also good fun.
We learned how to maintain the right chemical balance. How to clean it. When and how to backwash the filter. How to deal with problems as they came up. All the practical stuff that keeps a pool clear, sparkling and safe.
And then a remarkable thing happended. Suddenly people were asking us advice instead of the other way around. It was then we realised how much we’d learned about pools.
We decided to take the lessons we’d learned and package them up for anybody starting out on the journey into creating, maintaining and enjoying their own pool. But rather than make it difficult and theoretical like so much of the material is, we made it pragmatic and simple.
