Mosquito Bites – What’s The Answer To Avoid Being Bitten?
Mosquitoes are a big nuisance in Cyprus. A mosquito will sneak up on you – bite you without you even noticing – and you’ll itch for days and days afterwards.
The itching on its own is bad enough, but it’s impossible to leave the mosquito bites alone. You just can’t help yourself from scratching them, and then there’s a risk you’ll leave scars on your skin.
And the problem doesn’t stop there. Mosquito bites are proven to carry Malaria, Lyme Disease, Dengue Fever, Bubonic Plague and West Nile Fever – none of which are conditions you want to suffer from.
Mosquitoes are especially irritating if you’re out in the evening or when you’re trying to sleep. So what’s the solution to avoid mosquito bites in Cyprus?
You could fit fly screens – but they’re expensive and a nuisance when you want to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle.
There’s a host of insect repellent products you can buy to fend off mosquitoes or treat mosquito bites.
Usually insect and mosquito repellents work by masking human scent, or by using scent insects naturally avoid. That’s all well and good – but wouldn’t you rather smell attractive rather than of chemicals?
And then there’s the ‘chemical’ or ‘natural’ dilemma to the mosquito problem. Many people don’t want to use a chemical-based product and would rather find a natural solution to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
The most common insect repellents contain DEET to ward off mosquitoes and other pests. DEET should be used with caution due to its possible damaging effects on brain cells.
Prolonged use of DEET can result in problems with muscle coordination, muscle weakness, walking or even memory and cognition.
Citronella is said to repel mosquitoes, but may people find it’s smell obtrusive. Citronella is often burnt as candles to repel mosquitoes, but their light is very attractive to mosquitoes and they can exacerbate the problem.
When you live in Cyprus, you might consider taking Vitamin B every day from Spring to Autumn. There’s no conclusive proof, but many people find it help keep them clear of mosquito bites.
A unique solution to the mosquito problem is the ‘Moskeeter Eater’. It’s a simple electrical device that attracts mosquitoes and sucks them into a capture chamber from which they can’t escape.
It uses chemical-free technology to kill mosquitoes, sand flies and other nuisance pests. Electrically powered, it’s cheaper to run than a lampbulb and is whisper quiet when running. Perfect to fend off mosquitoes indoors or out, in villas, restaurants and hotels.
You can’t control the mosquitoes when you’re out and about, but a Moskeeter Eater can give you a safe haven from mosquitoes when you’re at home.
