Polemi Concentration Camp. For who, and why?

Polemi Concentration Camp. For who, and why?

This one is a bit of a mystery. Polemi Concentration Camp? Who were the inmates? Why were they held? How long were they held?

The camp is easy to find.  It’s on the edge of Polemi, just after you turn off the main Paphos to Polis road at Stroumbi towards Polemi and next to SODAP’s Kamanterena Winery.

We have two theories. One, it dates from the times of the island’s struggle for independence.

Second, Cyprus was a staging point for Jews on their way to Israel after the Second World War. In both cases, the British ran camps in Cyprus.

at the height of the EOKA troubles Polemi was used to intern suspected terrorists. In 1959 the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were in control. It was then taken over by my regiment the Durham Light Infantry. After the ceasefire it was the Highland Light infantry which were in charge till the troubles ended.
