Panayia tou Sindi Monastery - a delight for photographers

Completely off the beaten track is the fascinating and deserted Panayia tou Sindi orthodox monastery.

Situated in the valley of the River Potamos, it can only be reached along unmade tracks. A challenge to find, but well worth the effort. Probably best approached from the village of Pentalia on the E606 road from Acheleia to Pano Panagia.

Dating from the 14th century, Panayia tou Sindi (Virgin Mary of Sindi) has been restored by UNESCO. In 1997 this restoration project was granted the prestigious Europa Nostra award and was recognised as a World Cultural Heritage monument.

The award was in recognition of the “successful maintenance and restoration of the building with the use of the right technical methods and with respect to the maintenance of it’s original character.”

As photographers, we found Panayia tou Sindi a treasure.  Surrounded by hills, there’s loads of vantage points to see the monastery in its setting on the river.  Take the time to wander around, you won’t be disappointed.

Like so many older buildings in Cyprus, it’s hard to find out more. If you can add to the above, please comment below.
